In the News: Boo

McCain under fire for throwing Lebanese-American under the bus:

Ali Jawad, founder of the Lebanese American Heritage Club, was listed with five other finance committee members on an invitation to a $2,300-per-person fundraising dinner McCain plans to attend Tuesday in Oakland County.

Jawad and his supporters said during a news conference Monday that he was asked to resign from the committee after Michigan blogger Debbie Schlussel wrote that he had ties to Hizbullah. They said her comments were based on rumor and innuendo.

“We do not want a president who makes a decision … based on false information,” said Osama Siblani, president of the Arab American Political Action Committee and publisher of the Arab American News. “This is an insult to every Arab-American and Muslim-American in the country.”

Boo to McCain, for (among other things) isolating the Arab-American community. Like any person with actual ties to Hezbollah would support a war-mongering Republican, of all things.

As Magnitude of Myanmar Loss Grows, Aid Arrives:

The United States, which has led a drive for economic sanctions against Myanmar’s repressive regime, said it would also provide aid, but only if an American disaster team was invited into the country.

Boo to the United States. Myanmar’s hideous human rights violations are something that need addressing, for certain, but is the way to do it by threatening to deny to a country whose people are in crisis?

Somalia forces ‘out of control’:

Civilians are completely at the mercy of armed groups in Somalia, says human rights group Amnesty International.

It says the situation is “dire” in the centre and the south with government troops, their Ethiopian allies and Islamist insurgents “out of control”.

They carry out killings, torture, rape, beatings, arbitrary detention and forced disappearances, a report says.

Boo to everyone, for not caring more about this story.
